The end of another long hot summer and now we are stepping into fall and a new season of great documentary films and informed discussion. As we head to the polls to choose our new municipal councils we are also being asked to make a choice on how we vote provincially, do we stay with the First Past the Post system now in place or adopt a form of proportional representation?
Our 2018/2019 season opener, Menocracy, focuses on electoral systems as practiced in other jurisdictions. It examines various forms of electoral processes practiced globally and offers us an opportunity to look at the mechanics of these various systems and assess their effectiveness in electing governments that represent the will of voters.
Filmmaker Gretchen Kelbaugh, inspired by her great aunt, suffragette Gertrude Harding, set out produce a film that would allow us to “catch up to the rest of the world's democracies in the march to gender fairness and governments that reflect society.”
Doors open 6:30; film starts at 7:00.
