Event Description

On March 10, 2018 several thousand British Columbians, led by First Nations leaders and activists, took part in a protest against the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Cinema Politica's March 22nd screening, Sacred Water: Standing Rock Part I, focuses on another protest that took place in the Dakotas, USA, over the summer and winter of 2016.

On April 1, 2016 an elder of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe founded the Sacred Stone Centre to protest the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline on their sacred ancestral homeland.  Their rallying cry “Mni Wiconi! Water Is Life!” spreads and the protest grows as many other tribes and many non indigenous organizations and individuals join in the protest. Sacred Water showcases candid interviews, historical context, and a moving soundtrack. It delivers profound insight into the struggles taking place across North America around protecting sacred lands and waters and preserving First Nations culture and traditions.

Speaker Panel: Mike Gildersleeve (Environmental Activist) Gerry Pinel (Local Community Activist with Golden Ears Transition Initiative), Lynn Perrin (Pipe Up Network) and others to be announced.
