Here's a summary of the meeting notes from the February 28 meeting of the GETI Round Table. (The monthly Round Table meetings gives each GETI action group the opportunity to update everyone else on their status and activities. Everyone is welcome, but only representatives from action groups are invited to speak.)
Action Group Reports
Cinema Politica “Edible City” (shown in January) is being lent to Thomas Haney Secondary School for screening. Last week the film “The People of the Kattawapiskak River” was shown. Good attendance (about 50 people), good discussion, raised awareness around Idle No More protests. Next film is “Last Call at the Oasis” on March 21, which deals with water issues and coincides with World Water Day.
Hammond Neighbours Planning has begun for Hammond's 130th birthday Party in August; new riverfront park on Wharf Street – steering committee working with municipality; Dr Broe house has been awarded Heritage Designation; NOW House presentation in council chambers.
HUB Cycling Connection New cycle path between 216th and Laity provides final link in east-west cycle path in Maple Ridge. Working on “Bike to School” program for elementary schools.
CEED Centre Cheers to the Planet on April 28. Reviewing space usage at Meadowbrook School, talking to vendors and sponsors. Successful fundraiser earlier this month. The Saturday evening dinners being provided by St George's ministry will no longer be held at CEED Centre.
The Farm for Life Project Getting seeds going; building greenhouse; full speed ahead for 2013 season. Interested in Thomas Haney Secondary's aquaponics system.
GETI Event Committee 2013 GETIFest plans. Areas: Farmer's Market, Artisan Market, Village Square and yet-to-be-named youth village. Need many volunteer coordinators (two for each area). We have two volunteers to staff the GETI booth at Earth Day in April.
Youth Action Project Visited high schools in Maple Ridge / Pitt Meadows to discuss student involvement with GETI. Various forms of potential cooperation, driven by the teachers and students, including Cinema Politica screenings, lectures, involvement in groups, etc.
